PhD Student in Microwave Diagnostics for Disaster and Emergency Care
Develop next-generation microwave-based diagnostic tools for rapid triage of traumatic injuries in disaster settings.
Best for:Best for biomedical engineers, electrical engineers, or physics graduates with expertise in microwave systems, RF engineering, and computational electromagnetics, seeking interdisciplinary research at the intersection of engineering and emergency medicine.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at Chalmers University of Technology focuses on advancing microwave-based diagnostic systems for rapid triage and early detection of traumatic injuries in disaster and pre-hospital environments. The project builds on prior clinical validation and CE-marking of microwave systems for stroke, aiming to expand applications to emergency response and preparedness. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinical partners, conduct electromagnetic modelling, antenna/RF system design, signal processing, and experimental validation. The position is part of the national DISASTER-CARE Graduate School, offering interdisciplinary training in electrical engineering and disaster medicine. Applicants must have a strong foundation in microwave systems, RF engineering, and computational electromagnetics, with proficiency in English and Swedish.
What you'll do
- Enrol in and complete advanced-level courses within the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering and the DISASTER-CARE Graduate School in Disaster Medicine.
- Develop scientific concepts and communicate research findings both verbally and in writing.
- Conduct research on microwave-based diagnostic methods for disaster and emergency care applications.
- Design, model, and evaluate sensors, measurement systems, and algorithms for microwave diagnostics.
- Perform experiments in laboratory settings and realistic testing environments.
- Teach at the undergraduate level or perform related duties corresponding to 20% of working hours.
