PhD Position in Hydromechanical-Gas Modeling of Fractured Claystone
Develop advanced numerical models for gas migration and fracture behavior in deep geological radioactive waste repositories.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in civil, mechanical, or materials engineering with a strong background in geotechnical numerical modeling.
Overview
This 3-year doctoral research project is hosted by the LTDS laboratory at ENTPE, Université de Lyon, and funded by ANDRA. The work focuses on investigating the multi-physics behavior of Callovo-Oxfordian argillite, the host rock for the Cigéo deep geological repository project. The candidate will develop numerical methods and finite element models to simulate hydraulic properties, fracture initiation, gas migration, and self-healing phenomena. The successful applicant will collaborate within a dynamic geomechanics research network and apply advanced computational techniques to experimental data.
What you'll do
- Develop numerical methods to couple hydraulic properties and deformations using pore network characterization from imaging data
- Create discrete or equivalent continuous medium models for macroscopic fracture initiation and propagation driven by gas injection
- Implement simulations at the scale of in-situ experiments and Cigéo structures incorporating self-sealing phenomena
- Model fracture re-closure mechanisms and evaluate their consequences on deep underground storage structures
- Process and analyze experimental data to refine parameters such as gas entry pressure, water permeability, and retention curves
