EPSRC FIBE3 CDT PhD Studentship in Low-Carbon Shaft and Tunnel Segments
Investigate low-carbon, crack-resistant concrete mixes for precast shaft and tunnel segments in collaboration with Tracey Concrete.
Best for:Best for civil engineering graduates with a strong interest in cementitious materials and experimental concrete research.
Overview
This four-year MRes/PhD studentship is offered through the Cambridge EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero. The project is conducted in partnership with Tracey Concrete to develop sustainable, low-carbon, crack-resistant precast concrete mixes for tunneling and shaft applications. The researcher will combine advanced material characterization, thermodynamic modeling, and laboratory testing with industrial manufacturing trials. Candidates are expected to conduct rigorous experimental work, manage early-age volume changes, and collaborate closely with industrial partners to achieve practical net-zero construction solutions.
What you'll do
- Investigate commercially available and emerging low-carbon binder blends alongside sustainable fibres and admixtures.
- Examine methods to control early-age volume change and mitigate cracking risks in precast concrete mixes.
- Perform advanced material characterisation, kinetic and thermodynamic modelling, and dimensional stability assessments.
- Conduct laboratory testing for strength, permeability, workability, surface finish, and long-term durability.
- Participate in industrial manufacturing trials at Tracey Concrete to validate laboratory findings.
- Collaborate with academic supervisors and industrial partners to publish findings and meet project milestones.
