PhD Candidate in Fatigue Assessment of Aluminium Welded Structures
Investigate the fatigue performance and life-enhancement strategies of welded aluminium structures within the SFI FAST research center.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in mechanical or materials engineering with a strong background in experimental and solid mechanics.
Overview
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology invites applications for a 3-year PhD position focusing on the fatigue assessment and enhancement of aluminium welded structures. Funded through the SFI FAST Future Aluminium Structures centre, the candidate will examine local microstructural variations, residual stresses, and defects across weld zones. The work involves extensive experimental fatigue testing, XCT-based defect characterization, and the development of physics-based prediction methods. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with industrial and academic partners to advance sustainable aluminium usage in structural applications.
What you'll do
- Complete doctoral coursework and research training as part of the PhD program
- Investigate fatigue behavior and damage mechanisms in aluminium weldments, accounting for microstructural variations and defects
- Develop and evaluate post-weld heat treatment and mechanical modification strategies to enhance weld performance
- Perform experimental fatigue testing combined with XCT-based defect characterization and in-situ mechanical testing
- Develop and validate local, defect-based, and fracture-mechanics fatigue prediction models
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed international journals and present at conferences
- Collaborate with industrial partners and participate in SFI FAST activities, including mentoring master's students
