PhD Position in Radar Glaciology and Greenland Ice Sheet Firn Hydrology
Investigate multi-decadal changes in Greenland's firn layer and meltwater storage using historical airborne radar datasets.
Best for:Best for natural science graduates with a background in geophysics or remote sensing eager to apply large observational datasets to ice-sheet dynamics.
Overview
This doctoral position is hosted by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) within the Department of Glaciology and Climate, with academic enrollment at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The researcher will leverage over 25 years of airborne radar observations across the Greenland Ice Sheet to evaluate long-term shifts in firn properties and map internal drainage pathways. As part of the ERC-funded FirnMelt project, the work aims to bridge the gap between empirical observations and numerical projections of sea-level contributions. The successful candidate will collaborate with an international network of researchers, contribute to upcoming field campaigns, and engage in multidisciplinary training.
What you'll do
- Analyze multi-decadal airborne radar datasets to reconstruct near-surface firn evolution across the Greenland Ice Sheet.
- Map regional-scale changes in firn properties, including the expansion of subsurface ice slabs and impermeable layers.
- Identify and map englacial drainage channels connecting surface meltwater to the ice sheet bed.
- Integrate observational findings with advanced firn and hydrological models developed by project collaborators.
- Prepare scientific results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at international conferences.
- Contribute to planning and execution phases of upcoming airborne and ground-based field campaigns.
