PhD Student in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography
Investigate boundary layer cloud processes and microphysics using Large Eddy Simulation and Lagrangian modeling.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in physics, meteorology, or oceanography and an interest in computational fluid dynamics and atmospheric modeling.
Overview
Stockholm University's Department of Meteorology invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position focusing on boundary layer cloud processes through Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The successful candidate will implement a novel Lagrangian technique for cloud microphysics within the turbulence solver Neko and simulate marine boundary layers observed over the Baltic Sea. This collaborative project is funded by the Swedish e-science Research Centre and involves cooperation with KTH. The candidate will engage in advanced atmospheric modeling, code development, and independent research over a four-year period.
What you'll do
- Develop and improve code for representing cloud microphysics using a Lagrangian technique within the turbulence solver Neko
- Conduct Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of cloudy marine boundary layers
- Analyze high-resolution observational data collected over the Baltic Sea
- Contribute to scientific publications and present research findings at international conferences
- Engage in departmental duties, including limited teaching, research, and administrative tasks up to 20 percent
