PhD in Dynamic Space-Time Interfaces for High-Speed THz Beam Control
Explore cutting-edge sub-THz wave physics and dynamic space-time electromagnetic interfaces.
Best for:Best for physics or engineering graduates with a strong background in electromagnetics, wave physics, and numerical modeling.
Overview
Eindhoven University of Technology offers a fully funded four-year PhD position focused on developing dynamically modulated terahertz interfaces for advanced wave control. Operating within the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network SPARK, the project bridges electromagnetic theory, device design, and experimental characterization. The candidate will investigate high-speed spatiotemporal modulation to achieve frequency conversion, beam steering, and nonreciprocal propagation. Supervision is provided by Dr. Ahmed H. Dorrah at TU/e alongside co-supervisor Prof. Michaël Lobet at Université de Namur.
What you'll do
- Develop concepts for fast spatial and temporal modulation of terahertz waves.
- Perform numerical modeling and wave interaction simulations using tools such as Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, or CST.
- Design innovative structures that combine subwavelength spatial control with high modulation rates.
- Fabricate and experimentally characterize dynamic electromagnetic devices and MEMS-based architectures.
- Build and execute terahertz experiments to study beam steering, frequency shifts, and nonreciprocal responses.
- Collaborate with international partners across the SPARK network, including research secondments at Université de Namur and TNO.
