Overview

The University of East Anglia invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship focusing on mountain meteorology and atmospheric circulation. Working within the School of Environmental Sciences, the candidate will analyze observational data from the 2025 TEAMx field campaign over the Alps to study orographic gravity wave drag. The project involves conducting multi-scale simulations with Met Office numerical weather prediction models to enhance forecast accuracy in complex terrain. The successful applicant will receive comprehensive training in atmospheric dynamics, data analysis, and numerical modeling, alongside opportunities for collaboration with national and international research institutions.

What you'll do

  • Identify specific case study periods characterized by substantial orographic gravity wave activity using field campaign measurements.
  • Investigate the generation mechanisms, upward propagation, and breakdown processes of orographic gravity waves using observational data.
  • Execute multi-scale numerical simulations of selected weather case studies utilizing Met Office numerical weather prediction models.
  • Evaluate the realism of model simulations in capturing gravity waves and their frictional effects on upper-level winds.
  • Optimize weather prediction models to improve their accuracy and process-based representation of atmospheric drag.
