PhD Position: Development of Stationary Phases for Next-Generation ²²⁵Ac/²¹³Bi Radionuclide Generators
Develop advanced porous materials and surface chemistry for next-generation radionuclide generators used in targeted alpha therapy.
Best for:Best for chemistry or materials science graduates with a strong interest in functional materials, surface chemistry, and radiochemical separations, who enjoy hands-on experimental work and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Overview
This PhD position is a collaborative effort between KU Leuven, VITO, and PanTera, focusing on advancing materials science for radionuclide production. The project aims to design and optimize stationary phases for ²²⁵Ac/²¹³Bi generators, which are critical for targeted alpha therapy in cancer treatment. The successful candidate will conduct experimental research primarily at VITO in Mol, Belgium, under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Cardinaels at KU Leuven. The work involves bridging fundamental materials chemistry with practical technological challenges, ensuring robust performance under harsh conditions such as acidic environments and radiation exposure. The project offers a multidisciplinary environment, combining academic research, applied technological development, and industrial expertise.
What you'll do
- Design and develop three-dimensional porous stationary phases with tailored surface chemistry for efficient radionuclide separation.
- Optimize chemical functionalities to enable selective separation of ²¹³Bi from ²²⁵Ac under flow conditions.
- Investigate structure-property relationships and assess resistance to acidic environments and radiation-induced degradation.
- Evaluate separation efficiency, recovery, purity, and reproducibility under realistic operational conditions.
- Collaborate closely with researchers across KU Leuven, VITO, and PanTera to integrate fundamental research with applied technology.
- Communicate research findings through scientific publications, conference presentations, and a doctoral thesis.
