PhD on Numerical Modelling of Subsurface Erosion in Dikes and Geothermal Wells
Join a multidisciplinary team to develop advanced finite element models for predicting subsurface erosion in critical infrastructure.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in computational mechanics and an interest in geotechnical or civil engineering applications.
Overview
This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) focuses on the critical challenge of subsurface erosion in dikes and geothermal boreholes. The successful candidate will develop and extend coupled hydro-mechanical erosion models to better understand and predict failure processes that threaten infrastructure stability. The research involves a combination of advanced finite element method (FEM) simulations and calibration through laboratory experiments. You will work within the Applied Mechanics and Engineering Thermodynamics for Energy Systems chairs, contributing to the BEHeaT program on sustainable heat extraction. This role offers an opportunity to conduct high-impact research that supports climate-resilient development and energy transition goals.
What you'll do
- Develop and extend coupled hydro-mechanical erosion models using finite element methods.
- Calibrate numerical simulations using data from small- and medium-scale laboratory experiments.
- Investigate the influence of soil properties, flow paths, and scale on subsurface erosion phenomena.
- Create practical prediction tools for engineering applications in dikes and geothermal wells.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and academic or industrial partners.
- Contribute to teaching activities and student coaching for 10-15% of the contract time.
