PhD Project: Modelling Resilience of Water Distribution Networks
Develop mathematical models and software to predict and enhance the resilience of water distribution networks against various threats.
Best for:Best for quantitative engineering or mathematics graduates with strong modeling skills interested in critical infrastructure resilience.
Overview
This PhD project at the University of Nottingham focuses on assessing and improving the resilience of critical water distribution networks. Supervised by Rasa Remenyte-Prescott within the Faculty of Engineering, the research involves creating mathematical models and supporting research software to analyze performance indicators under partial or total link failures. The candidate will investigate threats such as infrastructure aging, climate change, and deliberate disruptions to identify critical network vulnerabilities. The successful applicant is expected to propose optimal resource allocation strategies to ensure robust infrastructure performance.
What you'll do
- Develop advanced mathematical models to simulate water distribution network performance under failure conditions
- Design and implement supporting research software for predictive network analysis
- Investigate the impact of various threat types including infrastructure aging, environmental shifts, and external disruptions
- Identify critical network links that significantly affect overall system performance
- Propose novel resource allocation frameworks to optimize network robustness and recovery
