PhD Position in Climate Adaptation, Thermophysiology and Health
Investigate how nature-inspired housing interventions mitigate heat stress and improve resident health in this 4-year PhD project.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in biomedical sciences, human movement sciences, or health sciences with a strong interest in thermophysiology and human-subject environmental research.
Overview
Radboudumc is seeking a motivated PhD candidate for the NWO-funded 'Nature4Homes' project starting in December 2026. The successful candidate will evaluate the physiological and perceptual impacts of nature-inspired housing interventions—such as green facades and natural microclimate variations—on urban residents during extreme summer heat. Working within the Department of Medical Biosciences (Human Physiology section), the research involves conducting extensive field measurements using wireless monitoring and controlled laboratory experiments utilizing virtual reality. The appointee will collaborate closely with consortium partners including TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, and WUR, manage participant data, and publish scientific articles leading to a doctoral dissertation.
What you'll do
- Design and execute large-scale summer field studies using non-invasive wireless monitoring equipment on residents.
- Perform thermophysiological experiments in a temperature-controlled environmental chamber.
- Supervise students and support staff contributing to fieldwork operations.
- Process data and conduct complex statistical analyses.
- Write peer-reviewed scientific articles and present findings at international conferences.
- Contribute to educational activities within biomedical sciences and medicine curricula.
