PhD Position in Bidirectional Power Converter Design and Control for Data Centers
Develop advanced power electronics and control strategies for next-generation data center solid-state transformers.
Best for:Best for electrical engineering graduates with a strong background in power electronics, control theory, and hardware prototyping.
Overview
Eindhoven University of Technology offers a four-year PhD position within the Electromechanics and Power Electronics group, focusing on bidirectional power converters and solid-state transformers for modern data centers. Collaborating with Delta Energy System GmbH, the research addresses critical challenges in power density, efficiency, and grid stability with an emphasis on the DC-DC conversion stage. The candidate will design, simulate, and experimentally validate novel topologies and control strategies while contributing a small portion of their time to teaching tasks. This role provides an opportunity to advance sustainable AI infrastructure within a vibrant industrial and academic ecosystem.
What you'll do
- Design and optimize power electronics converter topologies for solid-state transformers with a focus on the DC-DC stage.
- Develop and implement advanced control and modulation strategies to ensure high performance and grid stability.
- Perform numerical simulations using industry-standard tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or PLECS.
- Build hardware prototypes and conduct rigorous experimental validation of the proposed converter designs.
- Collaborate closely with industrial partner Delta Energy System GmbH on applied technological solutions.
- Engage in departmental teaching and coaching activities for a limited portion of the working time.
- Disseminate research outcomes through peer-reviewed journal articles and international conference presentations.
