Postdoctoral Fellow - Nephrology
Investigate uromodulin biology and epithelial cell mechanisms in kidney injury and stone disease.
Best for:Best for molecular and cell biologists with a background in protein trafficking, RNA biology, or metabolism interested in translational kidney research.
Overview
The Division of Nephrology at Indiana University School of Medicine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join a multidisciplinary research program focused on uromodulin (UMOD) biology, thick ascending limb epithelial cells, and their roles in kidney injury and nephrolithiasis. The selected candidate will investigate intracellular trafficking, alternative splicing, mitochondrial metabolism, and therapeutic strategies using advanced molecular techniques, animal models, and human tissue studies. The position provides a rich environment for career development, featuring structured mentoring, opportunities to lead high-impact publications, and participation in grant writing toward scientific independence. Candidates with strong backgrounds in molecular or cell biology who are eager to apply their expertise to renal physiology are encouraged to apply.
What you'll do
- Define molecular mechanisms regulating uromodulin trafficking, processing, and secretion in thick ascending limb cells
- Investigate injury-induced alternative splicing of uromodulin and its functional consequences
- Examine how uromodulin regulates mitochondrial metabolism and cellular adaptation during kidney injury
- Explore the links between uromodulin biology and kidney stone formation
- Contribute to the development of therapeutic approaches including splice-modifying strategies
- Integrate cellular assays with animal models, advanced imaging, and human kidney tissue studies
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact scientific journals and present findings at conferences
Requirements
Degree required: PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, nephrology, or a related biomedical field
Language: English; excellent proficiency required for communication and scientific writing
Instruction: English
- Strong foundation in molecular and cell biology or a related biomedical field
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
