Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Bacterial Secretion Systems
Investigate the structural biology of bacterial secretion systems using cryo-EM and single-molecule techniques.
Best for:Best for structural biologists with hands-on cryo-EM experience and a strong background in protein biochemistry and membrane complexes.
Overview
Imperial College London is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated structural biologist to join Professor Harry Low's group in the Department of Infectious Disease. The successful candidate will lead a project investigating the molecular mechanisms of bacterial secretion systems, including Tad and Type 4 pilus systems, supported by a Wellcome Trust Discovery award. The role involves carrying out protein purification, structure determination, and biochemical and biophysical characterization of multi-component membrane complexes. Applicants are expected to work collaboratively across campuses, utilizing advanced methods such as cryo-electron microscopy and TIRF microscopy.
What you'll do
- Lead an independent research project focusing on the molecular mechanisms of bacterial secretion and pilus systems.
- Execute protein workflows from initial DNA cloning and mutagenesis through expression and purification.
- Perform structure determination and biophysical analysis of challenging multi-component membrane complexes both in-vitro and in-cell.
- Utilize advanced structural biology techniques, including single-particle cryo-EM, in-situ cryo-tomography, and TIRF microscopy combined with single-molecule FRET.
- Disseminate research findings through high-impact international journals and conference presentations.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in structural biology, cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, or NMR
Language: English
Instruction: English
Publications: At least one first-author publication in an international peer-reviewed journal or on bioRxiv
- Demonstrated experience in the design and execution of workflows for protein structure determination
- Hands-on experience in molecular biology and biochemical experiments such as DNA cloning, mutagenesis, and protein purification
- Essential experience in cryo-EM workflows including sample preparation, data collection, and processing
- Strong research track record demonstrated by at least one first-author publication in an international journal or bioRxiv
- Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline, or be very close to completion (those not yet officially awarded will be appointed as a Research Assistant)
