Overview

The Master of Science in Geosciences at the University of Oslo offers interdisciplinary training across geology, geophysics, hydrology, climate science, and geohazards. Students specialise in areas like sedimentary basin analysis, environmental geosciences, planetary processes, or water-climate interactions, combining theoretical coursework with hands-on fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and data modelling. The programme emphasises real-world applications, from sustainable resource management to disaster mitigation, and includes opportunities for international exchange and industry collaborations. A 60 ECTS master’s thesis under expert supervision culminates the degree, preparing graduates for careers in research, public sector policy, or private-sector consulting. The curriculum adapts to individual interests, ensuring a tailored skillset for diverse career paths, including potential PhD studies or teaching qualifications.

What you'll do

  • Complete 60 ECTS of specialised coursework in your chosen geoscience subfield (e.g., basin analysis, geohazards, planetary processes, or climate-water systems).
  • Conduct independent research for a 60 ECTS master’s thesis under the guidance of a dedicated academic supervisor, selecting a topic aligned with your interests and the department’s expertise.
  • Participate in fieldwork and laboratory experiments to observe and model natural processes, including excursions to study sites in Norway and abroad.
  • Engage in data modelling, geomatics tools, and computational techniques to analyse Earth systems and environmental dynamics.
  • Collaborate with external partners (e.g., Norwegian Meteorological Institute, NGI) for thesis projects or industry-relevant research.
  • Optionally pursue an international semester at partner institutions (e.g., UNIS in Svalbard, universities in France, Switzerland, or Australia).
  • Join student associations and networking events to build a professional community and explore career opportunities in academia, public sector, or private industry.
