PhD Research Fellow in Climate Dynamics
Join a strategic project at the University of Bergen to advance subseasonal-to-seasonal climate prediction using hybrid physics-AI models.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in atmospheric sciences or applied mathematics and a keen interest in applying machine learning to climate modeling.
Overview
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen is seeking a PhD Research Fellow to join the NorCPMNext project, a strategic initiative within the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The project aims to improve the prediction of regional climate hazards and extremes by integrating artificial intelligence with traditional physics-based Earth System Models. The successful candidate will focus on AI-based downscaling techniques to provide actionable, high-resolution climate information for stakeholder-oriented case studies in Norway. This position offers an international research environment and the opportunity to collaborate with leading climate scientists across multiple institutions.
What you'll do
- Develop and implement hybrid physics-AI models for subseasonal-to-seasonal climate prediction.
- Perform AI-based downscaling of coarse-resolution climate model outputs to regional and local scales.
- Conduct stakeholder-oriented case studies to assess risks associated with extreme climate events in Norway.
- Collaborate with scientific partners at NERSC and NORCE within the NorCPMNext project framework.
- Participate in the doctoral training programme and complete required PhD coursework.
- Disseminate research findings through academic publications and presentations.
