PhD Opportunity - Ocean-Bottom Seismology in the Canadian Arctic
Join Dalhousie University for a fully funded PhD researching Arctic ocean-bottom seismology and seismic hazards.
Best for:Best for geophysics graduates with strong programming and seismic data analysis skills interested in Arctic research.
Overview
Dalhousie University invites motivated candidates to apply for a fully funded PhD position focusing on ocean-bottom seismology in the Canadian Arctic. Working within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the successful candidate will analyze seismic data collected by the National Facility for Seismological Investigations in collaboration with government partners such as Defense Research and Development Canada and Natural Resources Canada. The research will concentrate on offshore earthquakes, seismic hazards, and subsurface seismic tomography to enhance the understanding of regional tectonic evolution. The project offers opportunities for fieldwork, including ocean-bottom seismometer cruises, as well as conference participation.
What you'll do
- Analyze ocean-bottom seismometer data from the Canadian Arctic, Baffin Bay, and Labrador Sea.
- Investigate offshore seismicity, earthquake source processes, and implications for seismic hazard assessment.
- Perform seismic tomography to image subsurface structures and evaluate regional tectonic evolution.
- Participate in fieldwork including ocean-bottom seismometer deployment and retrieval cruises.
- Collaborate with external research partners from Defense Research and Development Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
- Disseminate research findings through academic publications and conference presentations.
