PhD Position in Genome Evolution and Architecture of Unicellular Eukaryotes
Explore the role of 3D chromosome folding in shaping genome evolution across understudied eukaryotic microbes using computational and wet-lab approaches.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in biology, bioinformatics, or computational genomics, eager to explore interdisciplinary research at the intersection of evolutionary biology and genomics.
Overview
This PhD position at Wageningen University & Research focuses on investigating how three-dimensional chromosome folding influences genome evolution in unicellular eukaryotes. The project combines computational genomics, bioinformatics, and phylogenetic analyses to uncover the structural and functional dynamics of non-model organisms. The successful candidate will work within the Laboratory of Microbiology, contributing to both computational and experimental research, while also engaging in teaching and supervising students. The research aims to advance understanding of eukaryotic diversification and origins, with potential applications in evolutionary biology and genomics.
What you'll do
- Apply cutting-edge bioinformatics tools to trace genome, gene, and protein evolution, including phylogenetic analyses and reconstructions.
- Characterize large-scale and small-scale genome architectures of understudied eukaryotic microbes using genomic data.
- Develop and pursue independent research questions while contributing to the broader understanding of eukaryotic diversification and origins.
- Collaborate on teaching activities, including supervising BSc and MSc thesis students.
- Conduct research in both computational and wet-lab settings, integrating genomic data with experimental microbiology.
- Work in a collaborative environment focused on unraveling the deep origins of eukaryotic cells.
