PhD Researcher: Environmental Impacts of Spatial Demographic Change
Explore how European demographic shifts and urban form shape future resource demand and greenhouse gas emissions.
Best for:Best for quantitative researchers with a background in GIS, environmental analysis, and sustainability sciences.
Overview
Leiden University's Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) invites applications for a 4-year PhD position focusing on the environmental impacts of spatial demographic change. The successful candidate will develop high-resolution demand models, integrate material flow and life-cycle assessments, and evaluate circular strategies for vacant infrastructure. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the researcher is expected to produce impactful scientific publications and contribute to regional development strategies. The project offers a collaborative academic environment with strong support for professional development.
What you'll do
- Develop high-resolution activity demand models for building and transport sectors under future European demographic scenarios.
- Integrate activity demand projections with material flow and life-cycle models to quantify energy requirements, material intensity, and GHG emissions.
- Evaluate adaptive reuse and circular strategies for vacant buildings and underutilized transport infrastructure in aging regions.
- Design integrated spatial planning scenarios combining built environment transformations with transport infrastructure investments.
- Collaborate across disciplines within the Institute of Environmental Sciences and external partner institutions.
