Doctoral Student in Surface Engineering of Electrodes for Flow Batteries
Advance flow battery technologies through novel electrode surface treatments and multiphysics modeling at KTH and SJTU.
Best for:Best for material science or electrochemistry graduates with a strong background in battery technologies and surface characterization.
Overview
This doctoral position focuses on advancing surface engineering of electrodes for stationary, long-duration flow batteries. Jointly hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the project combines experimental surface treatments with carbon nanofiber development to improve energy storage efficiency. The candidate will synthesize novel 2D transition-metal carbides, perform material characterizations, and collaborate on multiphysics modeling to predict electrode utilization and power density limits. The successful applicant will spend a year at the China-UK Low Carbon College at SJTU and work closely with an international research team. Responsibilities include independent laboratory experimentation, surface characterization, data analysis, and contributing to academic publications.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research on novel electrode surface treatments using 2D transition-metal carbides.
- Perform material characterizations to evaluate electrical conductivity, surface area, and chemo-mechanical stability.
- Collaborate with Shanghai Jiao Tong University on carbon nanofiber development activities during a one-year research stay in China.
- Develop and utilize multiphysics models to calculate electrode properties and predict current density distribution and power density limits.
- Analyze experimental data independently and prepare findings for peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences.
- Contribute up to 20% of work time to departmental tasks such as teaching assistance and administrative duties.
