Overview

This interdisciplinary Master’s programme at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) focuses on computational neuroscience, integrating mathematical, computational, and experimental approaches to study the brain. Students gain expertise in neural modelling, data analysis, machine learning, and programming while conducting research in cutting-edge labs. The curriculum includes lab rotations, advanced courses, and a research-oriented thesis. The programme is jointly organised by the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin (BCCN Berlin), offering a unique environment with over 60 research groups across multiple institutions. It is ideal for graduates in natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics with strong quantitative skills.

What you'll do

  • Develop and apply theoretical and computational models of neural systems across different scales, from single cells to macroscopic brain functions.
  • Conduct experimental work in neuroscience labs, including data acquisition and analysis of neural signals.
  • Develop programming skills in advanced languages and apply them to collaborative projects, including specifications, documentation, and testing.
  • Participate in lab rotations to gain hands-on research experience in diverse BCCN Berlin labs, including the option to complete one rotation abroad.
  • Engage in seminars and advanced courses to deepen knowledge in computational neuroscience, machine intelligence, and ethical implications of neuroscience research.
  • Present research findings and collaborate with peers and supervisors to advance interdisciplinary projects.
  • Reflect on the societal and ethical implications of computational neuroscience research.
