Doctoral Researcher in Concrete Modelling
Develop predictive life-cycle models for reused concrete elements in a fully funded 36-month PhD position.
Best for:Best for civil engineering or materials science graduates with strong modeling skills and an interest in sustainable infrastructure.
Overview
The University of Luxembourg invites applications for three fully-funded PhD positions within the Sustainable Concrete Structure Laboratory, supported by the ERC project RESCUE. Successful candidates will focus on developing innovative modeling frameworks to predict the remaining service life of reused concrete elements, incorporating laboratory testing, non-destructive evaluations, and data-driven physics-informed machine learning. The project seeks candidates interested in crossing traditional discipline boundaries between civil engineering, materials science, and data science. Appointees will collaborate closely with an international research team to advance sustainable construction practices and reduce carbon emissions. Candidates are expected to actively participate in experimental campaigns, produce high-quality research outputs, and engage with professional and academic partners.
What you'll do
- Design and execute a comprehensive laboratory campaign focusing on full-scale reused concrete elements.
- Develop and apply advanced non-destructive testing methods to assess material conditions.
- Create novel data-driven and physics-informed models to predict structural capacity and remaining service life.
- Evaluate life-cycle gains and environmental impacts to support sustainable construction practices.
- Collaborate across civil engineering, material science, and data science disciplines within the RESCUE project.
- Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at international conferences.
