Predoctoral Fellow on Compound Exposures and Health Early Warning
Join ISGlobal as a predoctoral fellow researching climate extremes and health early warning systems under the MSCA CLIMES network.
Best for:Best for early-career researchers with a master's degree, strong R programming skills, and a background in environmental epidemiology or atmospheric science.
Overview
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) invites applications for a 36-month predoctoral researcher position focusing on environmental epidemiology, atmospheric forecasting, and impact-based health early warning systems. Working within the research team of Dr. Joan Ballester Claramunt under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action CLIMES, the successful candidate will analyze extensive international databases linking environmental exposures to human health outcomes. The research involves modeling synergistic health effects from climate extremes and air pollution to develop operational warning systems for public health agencies. Candidates are expected to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team, participate in international secondments, and contribute to cutting-edge global health research.
What you'll do
- Apply epidemiological models to evaluate synergistic health impacts from compound environmental exposures such as temperature, humidity, and air pollutants.
- Investigate synoptic atmospheric conditions and climate variability patterns associated with compound meteorological and pollution episodes.
- Translate operational weather and air pollution forecasts into actionable health predictions.
- Assess and compare the forecast performance of environmental models against health outcome predictions.
- Design and implement operational, impact-based early warning systems to inform emergency planning for vulnerable populations.
