Master’s in Sustainable Energy Systems
A two-year programme equipping engineers to design and optimise clean, efficient energy solutions for a low-carbon future.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates (BSc in physics, mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering) seeking to specialise in sustainable energy technologies and transition strategies.
Overview
This Master’s programme at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) addresses the dual challenge of rising global energy demand and environmental degradation. Students gain a deep technical understanding of modern energy systems—from renewable generation to smart grids—while exploring sustainability principles. The curriculum blends engineering fundamentals with real-world case studies, preparing graduates for careers in energy transition, policy, or R&D. No prior energy specialisation is required, but a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, or engineering is expected. The programme is taught in English and delivered in Lappeenranta, Finland, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on problem-solving.
What you'll do
- Study core modules in sustainable energy technologies, including renewable energy sources, energy conversion systems, and energy economics.
- Engage in interdisciplinary projects addressing real-world energy challenges, such as grid integration of renewables or urban energy planning.
- Develop technical skills in energy system modelling, simulation, and optimisation using industry-standard software.
- Participate in fieldwork, lab experiments, or industry collaborations to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.
- Complete a 30-credit Master’s thesis under faculty supervision, focusing on a topic aligned with sustainable energy innovation.
- Collaborate with peers and industry partners to explore solutions for energy efficiency, storage, and distribution.
- Attend seminars and workshops on emerging trends in energy systems, such as hydrogen technologies or circular economy applications.
