PhD in Experimental Physics on Antimatter Molecules
Investigate fundamental atomic collisions and laser-cool molecular ions to explore the formation of antimatter molecules.
Best for:Best for physics graduates with a strong interest in lasers, quantum mechanics, and experimental atomic physics.
Overview
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers a four-year doctoral position within the NWO Vidi project SAMURAI to investigate fundamental molecular physics and quantum state collisions. Working inside LaserLaB Amsterdam's Molecular Ions group, the successful candidate will use advanced ultraviolet lasers, ion traps, and precision measurement techniques to study hydrogen molecular ions. The appointee will combine cutting-edge experimental work with theoretical calculations, develop specialized laboratory infrastructure, and disseminate findings through international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
What you'll do
- Excite molecular hydrogen using tunable extreme-ultraviolet lasers and image fragments via velocity-map imaging.
- Conduct spectroscopic observations of excited electronic states of hydrogen molecular ions.
- Trap ions using magnetic fields and millimeter waves to control dissociation pathways.
- Perform measurements of radiative association by joining cold protons and hydrogen atoms with light.
- Analyze experimental data using multichannel quantum-defect theory and scattering calculations.
- Design and maintain laboratory equipment including optics, electronics, and ultrahigh vacuum systems.
- Present research outcomes at international academic conferences and author peer-reviewed journal publications.
