PhD Position: Development and Characterization of a Multisensor Platform for Onshore CO2 Storage Monitoring
Develop advanced multisensor technology to improve long-term monitoring of onshore CO2 storage sites for enhanced reliability and societal acceptance.
Best for:Best for interdisciplinary researchers with expertise in sensor technology, multivariate data analysis, and environmental engineering, seeking a PhD opportunity at the intersection of geochemistry, hydrogeology, and instrumentation.
Overview
This PhD position at MINES Saint-Étienne focuses on designing and validating a multisensor platform for monitoring onshore CO2 storage sites. The project, part of the CO2MET consortium, aims to address challenges in distinguishing CO2 sources from environmental interference using sensors, multivariate analysis, and predictive algorithms. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory experiments, field tests, and algorithm development to ensure sensor reliability under varying conditions. The role combines research in instrumentation, data processing, and environmental science, with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and societal impact. The position is based at the SPIN–LGF Center, part of the Institut Mines-Télécom, and offers a 36-month contract starting in January 2027.
What you'll do
- Develop and validate a multisensor platform for detecting and distinguishing CO2 sources at onshore storage sites.
- Conduct laboratory experiments to assess sensor selectivity and performance under varying environmental conditions (temperature, pressure, humidity).
- Design and implement predictive algorithms to account for sensor drift, reproducibility, and variability in complex gas mixtures.
- Study the impact of sensor aging on performance and propose compensation algorithms to maintain accuracy.
- Perform real-world field tests at the Sainte-Marguerite site to validate sensor platforms under varying CO2 emission levels.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate sensor data with numerical simulations and visualization tools.
- Contribute to teaching activities and knowledge dissemination within the research center.
