Researcher in Large Language Models and AI-Theology Interfaces
Interdisciplinary AI researcher to develop computational hermeneutics and theological frameworks for AI mediation.
Best for:Best for AI researchers with a PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a related field, who are passionate about interdisciplinary work at the intersection of AI and theology.
Overview
This fixed-term research position at the University of Oxford’s Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion focuses on the technical aspects of the *God and the Machine* project. The successful candidate will work on Workstream 1, leveraging large language models (LLMs) as computational tools for theological interpretation, while also contributing technical expertise to Workstream 2, which explores AI’s role in human formation. The role combines cutting-edge AI experimentation—such as model interpretability, activation steering, and machine unlearning—with interdisciplinary collaboration between computer science and theology. Applicants must have a PhD in AI/ML or a related field and a passion for bridging AI research with theological inquiry. The project is funded by the John Templeton Foundation and spans 36 months, starting in late 2026.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental work with large language models, focusing on interpretability techniques such as activation steering and machine unlearning.
- Develop and deploy computational hermeneutic tools for theological interpretation using LLMs.
- Collaborate with theologians to design and refine AI-mediated frameworks for understanding human formation.
- Contribute technical expertise to Workstream 2, which explores the theological implications of AI’s role in shaping human behavior.
- Publish and present findings in both AI and theological research communities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary workshops and conferences related to AI and theology.
