PhD Position in Sustainable Material Science for SMART-HAIR Project
Develop bio-based, eco-friendly hair coatings for sustainable cosmetics with L’Oréal and ESPCI Paris.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in chemistry, materials science, or related fields with strong polymer chemistry and soft matter physics expertise, seeking a fully funded PhD in sustainable materials for cosmetics.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris (ESPCI Paris) focuses on creating innovative, bio-based hair coatings that combine durability, sustainability, and adaptive functionalities. The project, part of the PRISM programme co-funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe MSCA COFUND, aims to replace conventional synthetic materials with biodegradable polymers. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with L’Oréal Research & Innovation experts to design smart, reversible hair treatments that enhance volume, reduce frizz, and improve sensory benefits. The interdisciplinary research integrates polymer science, soft matter physics, and surface chemistry, with opportunities for international mobility and industry-academia collaboration.
What you'll do
- Investigate fundamental interactions between hair surfaces and bio-based polymer coatings to optimize adhesion and durability.
- Develop and characterize biodegradable polymer networks as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic cosmetic coatings.
- Design and test adaptive, reversible material behaviors for customizable hair functionalities (e.g., volume enhancement, anti-frizz protection).
- Collaborate with L’Oréal Research & Innovation experts to evaluate cosmetic efficacy, sensory attributes, and hair surface properties using advanced characterization tools.
- Conduct international mobility (e.g., research stays in Asia) to expand expertise in gel systems and responsive soft materials.
- Participate in interdisciplinary training programs covering sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and career development.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences.
