PhD Position in Environmental Analytical Chemistry: PFAS Source Identification via Stable Isotope Analysis
Develop groundbreaking analytical methods to trace PFAS origins, transport, and transformation using stable isotope analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
Best for:Best for analytical chemists or environmental scientists with a strong background in mass spectrometry, stable isotope analysis, and a passion for developing innovative solutions to environmental contamination challenges.
Overview
This PhD position at the University of Stuttgart’s VEGAS lab focuses on advancing environmental analytical chemistry to address the urgent challenge of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination. The project aims to pioneer a novel methodology for isotope-specific characterization of PFAS using high-resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap MS), enabling source identification and understanding of transport mechanisms. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on sustainable remediation technologies and groundwater contamination processes. The position offers hands-on experience with state-of-the-art analytical techniques and interdisciplinary collaboration across environmental science and chemistry.
What you'll do
- Develop and establish novel analytical methodologies for isotope-specific characterization of PFAS using high-resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap MS).
- Conduct laboratory experiments to analyze PFAS samples and interpret stable isotope data to trace contamination sources and transport pathways.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate analytical findings with groundwater flow and transport models.
- Publish research findings in high-impact scientific journals and present results at international conferences.
- Contribute to the advancement of sustainable remediation technologies for groundwater contamination.
- Participate in field pilot studies and large-scale experimental facilities to validate analytical methods under real-world conditions.
