Research Fellow in Magnetic Reconnection for Space Propulsion
Explore cutting-edge plasma propulsion using magnetic reconnection in a collaborative UK project.
Best for:Best for researchers with a PhD in aerospace engineering, plasma physics, or related fields, and hands-on experience in experimental plasma testing or vacuum chamber operations.
Overview
This Research Fellow position at the University of Southampton focuses on investigating magnetic reconnection as a novel method for space propulsion. As part of a three-year Leverhulme Trust-funded collaboration with the University of Oxford, the role will involve experimental research using Southampton’s advanced vacuum facilities to develop a test article for studying magnetic reconnection at a small scale. The successful candidate will contribute to a multidisciplinary team in the David Fearn Electric Propulsion Lab, engaging with academic partners, attending conferences, and advancing plasma physics for future propulsion systems. The position is ideal for researchers with expertise in aerospace engineering, plasma physics, or experimental testing of plasma devices.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research on magnetic reconnection for space propulsion using advanced vacuum facilities at the University of Southampton.
- Develop and test a magnetic reconnection test article to investigate plasma acceleration mechanisms.
- Collaborate with researchers at the University of Oxford to integrate theoretical and experimental findings.
- Engage in academic partnerships, attend conferences, and present research findings.
- Operate and maintain large-scale vacuum chamber facilities for plasma experiments.
- Contribute to the broader research team in the David Fearn Electric Propulsion Lab.
- Publish high-quality journal articles and disseminate research outcomes.
Requirements
