Overview

This PhD position at the University of the Basque Country focuses on advancing a novel continuous process that jointly recovers waste plastics and carbon dioxide to produce commercially viable synthesis gas. Working within the CPWV research group, the candidate will optimize operating conditions using simulation and experimental techniques, study reaction kinetics, and design improved catalysts with enhanced resistance to deactivation. The research involves operating conical spouted bed and fluidized bed reactor systems to process various plastics, including real and marine plastic waste. The successful applicant will conduct rigorous experimental studies, characterize deactivated catalysts, and contribute to scaling up the technology.

What you'll do

  • Optimize operating conditions for synthesis gas production and maximum CO2 conversion using simulation and experimental techniques.
  • Investigate the effect of the steam/CO2 ratio on the kinetics of steam and dry reforming reactions.
  • Develop comprehensive kinetic models defining the overall reforming process.
  • Design and optimize reforming catalysts by evaluating active metals, supports, and promoters.
  • Examine catalyst deactivation and regeneration processes, and perform comprehensive characterization of deactivated catalysts.
  • Explore the potential of the process for recovering various plastics and real plastic waste streams, such as marine plastic waste.
