PhD Studentship: Ecosystem Responses to Changes in Ocean Circulation
Investigate how marine ecosystems and carbon storage respond to climate-driven ocean circulation changes using observations and global modeling.
Best for:Best for science graduates with a strong interest in marine ecosystems, climate change modeling, and computational data analysis.
Overview
This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia investigates how marine ecosystems and trophic structures reorganise in response to rapid physical shifts in ocean circulation driven by climate change. The project combines observational analysis of satellite and in situ data with multi-century simulations using the NEMO-PlankTOM global ocean biogeochemistry model. Operating within the Greenocean research group, the candidate will receive specialised training in ocean ecosystem modelling, AI-based software development, and high-performance computing. The successful applicant is expected to design model simulations, collaborate internationally, and contribute to understanding the critical links between marine biodiversity, climate change, and ocean carbon storage.
What you'll do
- Conduct observational analyses using satellite data, in situ observations, and paleo reconstructions to evaluate recent shifts in marine ecosystems
- Design, set up, and execute multi-century global ocean biogeochemistry model simulations using NEMO-PlankTOM
- Investigate the reorganisation of ecosystem functional groups and trophic structures under shifting ocean circulation regimes
- Assess the implications of marine ecosystem changes for ocean carbon storage
- Engage in specialized training programs covering ocean ecosystem modelling, AI-based code development, and high-performance computing
- Collaborate with international research partners and participate in relevant academic summer schools
- Disseminate research findings through scientific communication and collaborative networking
