PhD Research Fellow in Applied and Computational Mathematics
Develop advanced mathematical models and numerical methods for large-scale CO₂ storage in subsurface formations.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in applied/computational mathematics, scientific computing, or related fields with strong PDE and porous media expertise.
Overview
This PhD position at the University of Bergen focuses on advancing computational and applied mathematics to optimize CO₂ storage efficiency. The successful candidate will work within the gigaCCS research center, contributing to modeling macro dispersion effects in large-scale storage operations. The project involves mathematical upscaling, discretization methods, and numerical analysis, with applications to North Sea storage formations. The Porous Media Group at the Department of Mathematics provides a collaborative environment with expertise in porous media processes and computational methods. The position offers a 3-year contract with potential for a 4th year, including career development opportunities.
What you'll do
- Develop mathematical models and numerical methods to simulate macro dispersion effects in large-scale CO₂ storage operations.
- Conduct research on upscaling techniques for porous media flow problems.
- Implement and test numerical methods using state-of-the-art open-source scientific computing software.
- Collaborate with the gigaCCS research center on regional storage scale-up projects.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences.
- Participate in teaching or career-promoting activities (25% time allocation if 4th year is granted).
- Contribute to the Porous Media Group’s research activities and interdisciplinary collaborations.
