PhD Position on Impact of Heavy Metal-Carrying Nanoplastics on Marine Microorganisms
Investigate how nanoplastics and associated heavy metals influence marine microbial physiology and molecular responses.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in microbiology or molecular biology with a strong interest in environmental toxicology and interdisciplinary research.
Overview
This PhD project at IPREM investigates the environmental and biological impacts of marine plastic pollution, specifically focusing on how nanoplastics act as vectors for essential and toxic heavy metals. Working at the interface of marine microbiology, chemistry, and molecular biology, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with chemists developing metal-transporting nanoplastics. The research involves evaluating toxicity, characterizing cellular responses using multi-omics approaches, and identifying key genetic markers involved in degradation and metal interaction. Candidates are expected to conduct rigorous experimental work, demonstrate autonomy, and engage in interdisciplinary scientific collaboration.
What you'll do
- Evaluate the toxicity and essentiality of nanoplastics alone or loaded with heavy metals on model marine microorganisms.
- Characterize cellular responses to nanoplastic exposure using transcriptomic, proteomic, and/or metabolomic approaches.
- Identify genetic and molecular markers involved in the degradation of or interaction with nanoplastics.
- Investigate the cellular mechanisms associated with metal utilization and toxicological response.
- Collaborate closely with chemistry researchers developing specialized metal-carrying nanoplastic particles.
