Overview

The Master of Science in Integrated Climate System Sciences (MSc ICSS) at the University of Hamburg is a two-year programme that integrates natural sciences (e.g., geophysics, meteorology, oceanography) with social and economic sciences to address climate variability and change. Students explore climate processes across the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, and biosphere using mathematical and numerical modelling, while also examining societal responses to climate challenges. The curriculum offers four specialised tracks—Physics of the Climate System, Biogeochemistry of the Climate System, Climate-Related Economics, and Climate-Related Social Sciences—allowing flexibility to focus on disciplinary depth or interdisciplinary collaboration. The programme emphasises research skills, interdisciplinary thinking, and practical applications through projects, workshops, and thesis work in collaboration with leading research institutions.

What you'll do

  • Develop and apply mathematical and numerical models to study climate processes across the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.
  • Conduct interdisciplinary research integrating natural sciences with social and economic sciences to understand climate change impacts and societal responses.
  • Participate in a Climate Study Project during the third semester, collaborating with research groups to prepare for the Master’s thesis.
  • Write and present a Master’s thesis in the fourth semester, working closely with academic supervisors and research teams.
  • Attend mandatory courses in research skills, climate system sciences, and technical skills such as scientific programming and data visualisation.
  • Choose elective courses from specialised tracks to tailor your curriculum to your academic or career interests.
  • Present research findings during the Integrated Climate System Science Seminar in the third semester.
