Research Fellow in Oxide-Dispersion-Strengthened Magnesium Alloys
Develop advanced oxide-dispersion-strengthened magnesium alloys for extreme aerospace and space environments.
Best for:Best for materials science researchers with expertise in physical metallurgy, advanced microstructural characterization, and advanced alloy processing.
Overview
The University of Southampton is seeking a Research Fellow to join an NSF-EPSRC collaborative project focused on transforming manufacturing oxide inclusions into finely dispersed nanoparticles within magnesium alloys. Working under the supervision of Dr Dikai Guan, the successful candidate will conduct experimental research combining alloy processing, friction-based manufacturing, multiscale characterisation, and extreme-environment testing. Key responsibilities include developing feedstock alloys, performing microstructure analysis, and evaluating thermal and radiation resistance. The appointment runs until May 2028 with a potential one-year extension.
What you'll do
- Develop and characterize feedstock magnesium alloys for experimental testing
- Perform multiscale microstructure characterization using advanced microscopy techniques
- Execute cryogenic and thermal-cycling testing to evaluate material stability
- Conduct radiation-resistance testing for extreme environment applications
- Analyze experimental data critically and document outcomes in high-impact research journals
- Present research findings at relevant scientific conferences and maintain regular progress reports
- Contribute to the secondary supervision of PhD and Master students
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Materials Science or a relevant discipline (or near completion)
Language: English
Instruction: English
Publications: Good track record of publication of research papers in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated track record of conducting independent scientific research and publishing papers
- Research experience in physical metallurgy and metallic materials
- Proficiency in advanced microstructure characterization methods
- Strong problem-solving abilities and critical analysis of experimental results
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for team collaboration
