Master of Science in Behavioural Neurobiology / Neuroethology
A multidisciplinary master’s programme exploring neurobiology, behaviour, and sociobiology through experimental and theoretical research.
Best for:Best for biology graduates with a strong foundation in neuroscience, behaviour, and experimental methods who seek interdisciplinary research training in neuroethology and sociobiology.
Overview
This Master of Science programme at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg combines neurobiology and behavioural physiology to provide a deep understanding of sensory systems, neuronal integration, decision-making, and social behaviour. Students engage in both theoretical and experimental work, selecting two major topics—neurobiology and behavioural physiology/sociobiology—each comprising two theory modules and a practical course. The programme emphasizes hands-on research, with students actively participating in ongoing projects, designing experiments, and writing a thesis based on their findings. The curriculum also includes integrated German and English language courses, intercultural training, and optional internships at international partner institutions. The programme is taught entirely in English, with no tuition fees, making it accessible to international students.
What you'll do
- Engage in theoretical and experimental research in neurobiology and behavioural physiology/sociobiology.
- Select two major topics, each including two theory modules and a practical course unit, to build foundational and applied skills.
- Conduct independent research projects as part of ongoing laboratory work, designing experiments and analyzing results.
- Complete a 25 ECTS thesis based on original research, including a 12-week preparatory practical course.
- Present and defend thesis findings in a final colloquium.
- Enrol in additional qualification modules to explore specialized areas of interest in behavioural biology.
- Participate in integrated German and English language courses to enhance language proficiency.
- Engage in optional internships or thesis work at international partner universities.
