PhD Position in Bio-Based Battery Electrolytes
Develop sustainable bio-based electrolytes for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries to reduce climate impact and strategic resource dependence.
Best for:Best for chemistry, materials science, or physics graduates with hands-on experimental lab experience and a passion for sustainable energy solutions.
Overview
This PhD position at Uppsala University’s Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory focuses on advancing sustainable battery technology by designing bio-based electrolytes from renewable carbon sources. The project aims to reduce environmental impact, enhance safety, and decrease reliance on fossil-based materials. The successful candidate will conduct experimental research, including electrolyte development, battery assembly, and advanced characterization techniques such as electrochemical testing and spectroscopy. Collaboration with the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre and participation in high-impact publications are expected. Up to 20% of the workload may involve teaching.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research to develop bio-based electrolytes from renewable carbon sources for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries.
- Perform battery assembly and apply advanced electrochemical techniques such as galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
- Characterize electrolytes and electrode interfaces using methods like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy.
- Collaborate with the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre team to integrate and test electrolytes with state-of-the-art electrode chemistries.
- Publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.
- Participate in third-cycle courses related to research topics and contribute to teaching (up to 20% of working hours).
Requirements
Degree required: A second-cycle degree (Master’s) in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related field, OR completion of at least 240 credits in higher education with 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits.
