Master of Science in Scientific Computing
An interdisciplinary master’s programme blending mathematics, computer science, and high-performance computing for real-world technological challenges.
Best for:Best for students with a strong background in mathematics, computer science, physics, or engineering who want to specialise in high-performance computing, numerical simulations, and data-driven problem-solving for interdisciplinary applications.
Overview
The Master of Science in Scientific Computing at the University of Bayreuth is designed for students seeking to master the full spectrum of scientific computing—from mathematical modelling and numerical analysis to high-performance computing and data-driven optimisation. This elite programme, funded by the Bavarian government, addresses the growing demand for experts capable of developing precise simulations and efficient algorithms for complex problems in engineering, physics, chemistry, and environmental sciences. Students engage in interdisciplinary coursework, industrial collaborations, and research projects, with mentorship from faculty and industry partners. The curriculum includes core modules on numerical mathematics, modelling, high-performance computing, and scientific data analysis, complemented by practical internships and seminars. Graduates emerge with both theoretical expertise and hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in research, industry, or a fast-track PhD pathway.
What you'll do
- Develop and implement numerical algorithms for solving differential and integral equations, optimisation problems, and data-driven models.
- Conduct research in interdisciplinary areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering, and environmental sciences using high-performance computing tools.
- Participate in modelling seminars where problems are presented by industrial partners, guiding the solution process from formulation to implementation.
- Complete an industrial internship to gain practical experience in applying scientific computing techniques to real-world challenges.
- Write a Master’s thesis on an individual research project, either in collaboration with industry, international experts, or under faculty supervision.
- Attend and contribute to modelling and status seminars, presenting progress and findings to peers and mentors.
- Develop key skills in technical communication, literature research, teamwork, and handling foreign-language specialist literature.
- Design an individual study plan with guidance from a dedicated mentor, aligning coursework with personal research interests.
