Doctoral Position in Topochemical Tuning of Layered Oxides
Join ETH Zurich to research soft-chemistry transformations in complex inorganic oxides for advanced electronic and energy applications.
Best for:Best for chemistry, materials science, or physics graduates with a strong background in inorganic synthesis and an enthusiasm for experimental solid-state research.
Overview
The newly established Solid-State Materials Chemistry Group at ETH Zurich invites applications for a fully funded doctoral position focusing on the topochemical tuning of layered perovskite oxides. The selected candidate will prepare thin films, single crystals, and nanoparticles, develop innovative post-growth soft-chemistry reactions, and perform advanced structural and functional characterization. Working within a collaborative and inclusive international team, the researcher will help build up a new laboratory and contribute to foundational studies for future memory, logic, and sensing technologies. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate a strong foundation in inorganic materials synthesis alongside excellent English communication skills.
What you'll do
- Synthesize layered oxide precursors in the form of thin films via pulsed-laser deposition, single crystals, or nanoparticles.
- Design and optimize post-growth topochemical reactions using solution-based and controlled-atmosphere methods.
- Analyze compositional, structural, and functional properties using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetometry.
- Collaborate with internal and international research groups and conduct experiments at large-scale facilities like the Paul Scherrer Institute.
- Disseminate research findings through scientific publications and conference presentations while assisting with laboratory setup and maintenance.
