Fully Funded MS and PhD Positions in Earthquake Science
Join Utah State University for fully funded graduate research opportunities in earthquake science and fault mechanics.
Best for:Best for quantitative-minded science and engineering graduates seeking funded graduate research in seismology and fault mechanics.
Overview
The Department of Water, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at Utah State University invites applications for fully funded Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy positions starting in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2027. Openings span four distinct research groups focusing on subduction zone earthquake mechanics, fault network behavior, deformation in earthquake critical zones, and statistical seismology. Successful candidates will engage in rigorous experimental, field, remote sensing, or computational research alongside leading faculty members. Applicants are expected to possess quantitative backgrounds and a strong interest in advancing our understanding of seismic hazards.
What you'll do
- Conduct laboratory-based friction experiments on geological core samples or develop finite element models for near-trench loading.
- Analyze geologic and geodetic data to study fault geometry, fault interactions, and inelastic strain distribution.
- Perform multiscale textural, geochemical, and geomechanical analyses on fault zone rock samples.
- Build point-process and neural network models from earthquake catalogs to forecast seismicity and earthquake interactions.
- Contribute to seismic hazard assessments for regional infrastructure through data-driven or theoretical computations.
