PhD in Dynamic Space–Time Interfaces for High-Speed THz Beam Control
Explore cutting-edge sub-THz wave physics, dynamic modulation, and spatiotemporal beamforming in a European doctoral network.
Best for:Best for physics or engineering graduates with a strong foundation in electromagnetics and an interest in THz technology and experimental photonics.
Overview
This PhD position investigates novel physics in space-time electromagnetic interfaces that change properties on the timescale of the wave itself. Based at Eindhoven University of Technology within the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group, the candidate will design, fabricate, and characterize dynamic sub-THz structures. The project forms part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network SPARK, involving collaborative research stints at Université de Namur and TNO. The researcher will engage in experimental and theoretical work to pioneer GHz-rate spatiotemporal beamforming for future wireless applications.
What you'll do
- Develop innovative concepts for fast spatial and temporal modulation of terahertz waves.
- Model electromagnetic wave interactions with dynamically changing interfaces using numerical software.
- Design advanced structures combining subwavelength spatial control with high modulation rates.
- Investigate suitable modulation mechanisms, including MEMS-based architectures and alternative platforms.
- Fabricate and experimentally characterize the resulting microscopic and macroscopic devices.
- Build custom terahertz experimental setups to analyze beam steering, frequency shifts, and nonreciprocal responses.
- Demonstrate GHz-rate two-dimensional spatiotemporal beamforming for reconfigurable communication systems.
