PhD Studentship: Malaria Parasite Protein Degradation Machinery
Explore novel antimalarial drug strategies by exploiting the ubiquitin system in Plasmodium falciparum.
Best for:Best for biology or biochemistry graduates with a strong interest in parasitology, protein degradation, and drug discovery.
Overview
The Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge offers a fully funded four-year PhD studentship starting in October 2027. Supervised by Professor Katerina Artavanis-Tsakonas and co-supervised by Laura Itzhaki, the project investigates the ubiquitin system in Plasmodium falciparum to selectively destroy essential parasite proteins. The research combines parasite genetics, biochemistry, and chemical biology to uncover new vulnerabilities and discover innovative antimalarial treatments. Candidates will work within a vibrant academic environment in central Cambridge and are expected to drive independent research while meeting all university milestones.
What you'll do
- Design and execute experiments combining parasite genetics, biochemistry, and chemical biology.
- Investigate the ubiquitin system and protein stability mechanisms in Plasmodium falciparum.
- Develop novel tools for exploring parasite biology and antimalarial drug targets.
- Analyze complex datasets, maintain precise laboratory records, and prepare findings for publication.
- Collaborate with supervisors and research group members across the Departments of Pathology and Pharmacology.
