Research Master in Natural Language Processing
Interdisciplinary master’s programme blending computational linguistics and AI to design responsible, human-centred language technologies.
Best for:Best for linguists, computer scientists, and interdisciplinary scholars passionate about AI ethics, language technology, and human-centred design who seek rigorous research training in NLP.
Overview
This two-year Research Master in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at the University of Groningen bridges linguistics and computer science to explore how humans interact with AI-driven language systems. The programme equips students with advanced technical skills in machine learning, language modelling, and computational semantics, alongside a deep understanding of linguistic theory and ethical implications. Graduates are prepared for cutting-edge research in academia or industry, with a focus on developing transparent, trustworthy, and nuanced NLP applications. The curriculum integrates theoretical foundations with hands-on research, addressing challenges like misinformation, translation errors, and subjective framing in AI systems. It also offers a double-degree option with Information Science, broadening interdisciplinary exposure.
What you'll do
- Conduct advanced research in NLP, integrating computational methods with linguistic theory to address real-world challenges like misinformation and translation errors.
- Develop and evaluate machine learning models for language tasks, including text generation, translation, and semantic analysis.
- Engage in interdisciplinary projects that critically assess the societal and ethical impacts of NLP technologies.
- Collaborate with faculty and peers on cutting-edge research, contributing to publications and conference presentations.
- Apply computational techniques to analyse human language use, framing, and nuance in both experimental and field settings.
- Participate in a rigorous curriculum blending theoretical linguistics, computer science, and empirical research methods.
