Overview

This PhD position at Delft University of Technology focuses on developing tailored magnetic nanoparticles that act as self-regulating thermal switches for composite welding. The researcher will synthesize and functionalize these materials, characterize their structural and magnetic properties, and link their performance to heat generation. Operating within the NCFun group, the candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary academic and industrial partners across Europe. The expected outcome is a functional technology suitable for decentralised manufacturing in aerospace and defence applications.

What you'll do

  • Synthesize colloidal magnetic nanoparticles with tunable switch temperatures using chemical methods.
  • Perform post-synthetic and in-situ surface functionalization to ensure stable dispersion within polymer matrices.
  • Conduct structural and compositional characterization using XRD, XPS, TEM, and NMR techniques.
  • Execute magnetic characterization and switch-temperature determinations via SQUID, VSM, and magneto-thermogravimetric analysis.
  • Correlate nanoparticle composition and structure to specific absorption rate and magnetic heating performance.
  • Collaborate closely with academic and industrial consortium partners across multiple countries.
