PhD Student in Power Systems Engineering: Wind Generation and Electric Mobility
Join a research project at Reykjavik University investigating grid stability and ancillary services for Iceland's energy transition.
Best for:Best for power systems engineers with strong Python programming skills and an interest in renewable energy integration.
Overview
Reykjavik University is seeking a motivated PhD student to conduct research on the integration of large-scale wind generation and electric mobility into Iceland's isolated power system. The project focuses on developing ancillary services and grid upgrade strategies to maintain stability amidst rapid electrification and the transition to variable renewable energy. Working at the intersection of power systems engineering, energy modeling, and optimization, the candidate will utilize PyPSA-based models to simulate future scenarios. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with major Icelandic energy operators and contribute to national climate neutrality goals. The research direction will be tailored to the candidate's interests while aligning with the project's core objectives.
What you'll do
- Develop and extend PyPSA-based models of the Icelandic power grid to simulate future energy scenarios.
- Characterize and benchmark Nordic and EU frameworks for ancillary services.
- Create spatially and temporally resolved load profiles for electric vehicle charging.
- Propose an optimal roadmap for ancillary services to support grid stability.
- Collaborate with Icelandic transmission system operators and international research partners.
- Publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed academic journals.
- Contribute to national energy planning and climate neutrality initiatives.
