PhD Position in Electrocatalysis and Operando Electrochemical Characterization
Investigate electrolyte effects on CO₂ electroreduction mechanisms using advanced operando techniques at ETH Zurich.
Best for:Best for motivated researchers with a Master’s in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering, eager to tackle fundamental questions in electrocatalysis and operando characterization.
Overview
This PhD position at ETH Zurich’s Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory focuses on uncovering fundamental mechanisms in electrocatalytic energy conversion. The successful candidate will explore how electrolyte environments influence reaction pathways and product selectivity in electrochemical CO₂ reduction (CO₂RR) and related processes. Using a combination of electrochemistry and advanced operando characterization techniques—such as FTIR, DEMS, EQCM, and GC—the project aims to develop mechanistic insights that enable the rational design of next-generation electrochemical systems. The role emphasizes hands-on experimentation, data interpretation, and collaborative research within an interdisciplinary team.
What you'll do
- Design and execute electrochemical experiments to study electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms
- Apply advanced operando characterization techniques (FTIR, DEMS, EQCM, GC, synchrotron methods) to probe electrochemical interfaces
- Analyze and interpret experimental data to develop mechanistic insights into electrolyte effects
- Develop new concepts for electrolyte-controlled electrocatalysis
- Present research findings at international conferences and publish in leading scientific journals
- Collaborate with group members and international partners on interdisciplinary projects
