Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) Associate in Reinforcement Learning
A short-term industrial collaboration applying reinforcement learning to autonomous camera control for maritime situational awareness.
Best for:Best for researchers or graduates with practical experience in reinforcement learning and an interest in industrial AI applications.
Overview
The University of Bath is seeking an ambitious graduate to join an Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) project in partnership with Synoptix Ltd. This role focuses on developing a reinforcement learning system to optimize Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera control for autonomous attention allocation and contact prioritization in maritime environments. The successful candidate will work on extending the Synx-Lookout product by integrating autonomous decision-making capabilities that function on edge hardware. You will be supported by both academic supervisors from the Department of Computer Science and industrial mentors from Synoptix Ltd. This project offers a unique opportunity to apply academic research to real-world industrial challenges.
What you'll do
- Design and implement reinforcement learning algorithms for autonomous camera control.
- Develop and test systems within synthetic environments before deploying to physical PTZ hardware.
- Collaborate with industrial partners to integrate AI capabilities into the Synx-Lookout product.
- Manage project tasks independently while maintaining clear communication with academic and industrial supervisors.
- Document research findings and technical developments in formal reports.
- Optimize algorithms for performance on edge computing hardware.
Requirements
Degree required: BSc, MComp, MSc, or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.
Language: English (Professional proficiency required).
Instruction: English
- Practical experience with modern reinforcement learning algorithms.
