Applied Mineralogy and Crystallography (MSc)
Specialisation in experimental and analytical techniques for geomaterials and functional materials at RWTH Aachen University.
Best for:Best for graduates with a strong background in geosciences, materials science, or chemistry who seek specialised training in crystallography, mineralogy, and advanced materials characterisation for research or industry roles.
Overview
The Applied Mineralogy and Crystallography (AMC) specialisation within RWTH Aachen University’s MSc in Applied Geosciences offers advanced training in the structure, chemistry, and properties of geomaterials and functional materials. Students gain hands-on experience in laboratory techniques, microscopy, diffraction methods, and fieldwork, including opportunities for research at synchrotron facilities. The programme blends theoretical knowledge with practical applications, preparing graduates for careers in both academic research and industry. It is ideal for those seeking expertise in materials science, geosciences, and crystallography with a focus on technological applications like battery components. The curriculum is flexible, allowing students to tailor their studies with elective modules and international exchange opportunities.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental and analytical work in advanced laboratory settings, including diffraction methods and microscopy techniques.
- Participate in fieldwork and integrated study abroad units to gain practical experience in diverse geoscientific environments.
- Develop and execute research projects, including opportunities at synchrotron radiation facilities and neutron sources.
- Customise your studies by selecting elective modules such as geochemistry, data management, and chemistry/materials engineering.
- Complete a Master’s thesis under academic supervision, contributing to research in geomaterials and functional materials.
- Engage with international guest lecturers and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad.
